France is the world’s number one tourist destination with over 75M tourists per year and the Dordogne is the 2nd most visited region after the Paris/Ile de France region. The Dordogne hosts such a wide variety of cultural and historical sites clustered together, ranging from pre-historical caves, to medieval castles.
The Perigord is a four coloured place, white, green, purple and black!
White Perigord includes Périgueux (the capital of the department), the Isle valley and is centrally-situated comprising the limestone plateaux and wide valleys which are traversed by the rivers Auvezère and Isle.
Green Perigord is the northern extremity encompassing Nontron, the Val de Dronne and the Périgord-Limousin Natural Park. The valleys are heavily wooded and criss-crossed by a myriad of rivers and streams.
Purple Perigord in the south west centres on Bergerac, historically called the "Gateway to the Dordogne" and includes the vineyards of Montaigne, Pécharmant and Monbazillac.
Black Perigord in tourist terms is the most important of the four regions. The south eastern corner surrounds medieval Sarlat and runs along the Vézère and Dordogne valleys, which are the heart of both the truffle and prehistoric history, in France.
