The Dordogne region



41% of the region’s land area is used for agricultural purposes. Agriculture is the Dordogne’s principal employer (20,000 workers in 12,000 farms) and the principal source of income (>661M€ in 2001). There is considerable financial support for this sector.

Gastronomically speaking the Dordogne is world famous, with leading traditional products. Examples include the wines of Bergerac, truffles, walnuts strawberries as well as the famous “foie gras”… produced from the livers of geese and ducks that have been force fed. Cattle is the region’s most important source of income (138M€).

Additionally, 2M hectolitres (hl) of milk create a turnover of 59M€ annually. Wine is also a significant source of income (112M€). Wine production, covering 39,520 acres, is found mostly around Bergerac. And in third place is animal fodder and vegetables.

The Dordogne is France’s number one producer of tobacco with 1,700 tons and with 20,000 tons of strawberries grown each year, the region produces 25% of France national production.
