Chocolate Confetionary - seasonal celebrations

chocolateIn France we consume over 260,000 tons of chocolate confectionary per year with some 40 000 tons being consumed over Christmas and New Year’ Eve period. As we all increasingly celebrate seasonal heavily marketed events (Christmas, Valentines Day, Mother and Fathers day, Halloween etc.) and succumb to snacking (59% of men and 76% of women have an afternoon snack in France) the chocolate confectionery market benefits.

The average French person consumes over 7kg of chocolate per year and over 17M French people eat chocolate every day. And who are the key consumers – men in the 18-34 age group followed by women at home and then students.

Also it is worth noting that those victims of advertising young children of whom 63 % aged between 4 and 10 have a chocolate drink at breakfast and 19% in the afternoon.

Market studies reveal that business managers consume more per head as a category than employees! Is a lot of this stress related; as we do know that chocolate remains a solitary pleasure for 70% of the population. Less than 30% of consumers would like to share chocolates with friends and family!

The French market for chocolate confectionery is big business, worth over €3 billion, fourth in the world just after the US, the UK and Germany. Only 56 companies account for over 90 % of chocolate production, with 811 small companies sharing the balance and altogether employing over 13, 000 lucky souls.
