France is rightly proud of its aeronautic and space industries. The aeronatic industry in France employs more than 200,000 people, and represents over 5% of total French industry. In the last few years, massive industrial restructuring and consolidation has changed the profile of the sector. Today, it is dominated by trans-European groups that focus on civil or military aeronautics or the space industry, like EADS. Orbiting these giant firms is a wealth of suppliers and equipment manufacturers, many of which are world leaders in their fields.
The Midi-Pyrenees region is the geographic heart of the French aeronautic industry. The region boasts the headquarters of numerous companies, in particular Airbus.
Also helping to ensure the region’s supremacy are public organisations, such as the National Centre for Space Studies (CNES), the National Office of Studies and Research for Space (ONERA), and various engineering schools and universities (Ecole Nationale d’Ingénieurs des Constructeurs Aéronautiques, Ecole Nationale de l’Aéronautique et de l’Espace).
