New Business Ceation at Record Level in France

start_up_webIn 2005, some 225,000 new companies were created in France – setting a new record. The first six months of 2006 reinforces the trend as, on a rolling 12 month basis, the number of new start-ups is running at 230,813 by the end of June 2006. This is in stark contrast to the moribund years before 2002. The enthusiasm for business start-ups is a reflection of several trends but was given the necessary boost in 2002 with the adoption of the 2003 Government Budget calling for lighter administrative requirements and social charges for new business creations.

Real estate companies enjoyed the fastest rate of new business creations, up 15.4% from June 2005 to June 2006. Thereafter came business service companies (+7.5%), construction companies (+4.5%) and education and health (+3.7%). On the negative side, the consumer durable sector saw a 5% drop in new business creations. In absolute terms, the retail sector saw the largest number of start-ups, with 82,026 new retailers created, followed by business services.
