Mov’eo is the name given to the French automobile trade cluster, defined geographically as the corridor stretching from the Paris basin to upper Normandy. While there is significant automobile expertise in other areas of France, notably around Lyon, Mov’eo has the greatest concentration of car know-how, including almost all French expertise in motors and in energy consumption. Judged by 10,000 people involved in R&D, Mov’eo already ranks alongside the three largest automobile trade clusters in the world: Detroit (USA), Kanoto-Tokai (Japan) and South-West Germany.
Mov’eo’s is structured around four strategic activities:
Energy/propulsion systems/environment: this division groups together research centres and companies that focus on reducing energy consumption or using alternative, less-polluting energy sources for cars.
Road security: road security applies to all levels and types of interaction between vehicles, infrastructure and man. The Vestlab test site, near Versailles-Satory, dominates the R&D efforts. Some €20m is earmarked for converting this ex-testing site for army tanks, into a unique area for testing all driving conditions. The division is focusing on analysing driver behaviour and on the use of telecommunications.
Mobility and Services this area of expertise focuses on the inter-relations of drivers, public transport, pedestrians, bicyclists and persons of reduced mobility. Corporate activity and research range from self-piloting buses, easier wheelchair access to payment methods.
Mecatronics: mecatronics refers to the integration of electronics and IT into a mechanical machine. The division is dominated by the car equipment companies and benefits from research facilities at the University of Versailles.
