French Industry Pleads Defense Cooperation with Germany
A few weeks after the Franco-British military cooperation agreement, the think-tank of the French industry, Institut Montaigne, held a vigorous plea for corresponding closer integration of French and German defence industries. The two countries needed to get back to a cooperation similar to those that brought about the Transall airplane or Tiger and Milan helicopters, said Jean-Paul Tran Thiet.
This member of the board at Institut Montaigne and president of its working group on European affairs was speaking at a major meeting of the French and the German strategic community in the conference center Schloss Genshagen near Berlin. Successful cooperation is the fruit of decades of common efforts in research and development, added Tran Thiet, a former advisor to the French government. This could only be attained if France and Germany managed to overcome the current atmosphere of mistrust. The countries needed to agree on true cooperation in economic and budgetary politics.
