The company

One of the UK’s largest and long established multi-disciplined construction groups, undertaking works in the role of main or sub contractor, design, build and/or develop. The group operates both nationally and internationally with investments in subsidiaries and associated companies that also provide high tech equipment and management in the fields of contaminated soil cleaning and improvement as well as road repair.

The products and services

Today the group has 5 operating divisions:
1. Earthmoving Division is the historic core business.
2. Civil Engineering Division undertakes construction from foundation to structure with the surrounding highway works, new roads, drainage, services, car parks, hard and soft landscaping.
3. Engineering Division provides engineering support facilities for routine and preventative maintenance, major overhauls and rebuilds to external customers.
4. Geotechnical Division specializes in soils improvement to enhance the foundation capability on marginal development sites.
5. Remediation Division undertakes projects whose aim is to convert be-spoiled land into land for beneficial use. The goal is to produce a clean site suitable for the next phase of development, whether this involves housing, commercial, industrial or public open spaces.

The objectives

“Entering the French construction and contaminated land remediation market via an acquisition of or partnership with an existing business”.

IBT services

In-depth market knowledge was acquired though the “Industry Report” provided by IBT Partners. A detailed brief was agreed upon with the client board director responsible for international development, focusing upon 3 specific sub-sectors and perceived opportunities.  Three months later the report was presented by two IBT Partners client managers at the groups’ headquarters’ in the UK to the board of directors. Two weeks later at a meeting in Paris, at the IBT Partners offices, a business development strategy for France was agreed.

The next steps were the identification, profiling and contacting of potential “partner” targets, companies that fulfilled specific requirements were short-listed and contacted. IBT Partners built the database (53 companies throughout France), prepared the communications (both corporate and services) documentation and contacted the targets (in the field of land remediation 14 were retained, 20 environmental consultants and 19 earth movers). At the international environmental exhibition “Pollutec” in Paris, meetings and presentations were prepared and held with the directors of selected target companies which lead to a series of business development opportunities for the client in France.

Demand in France for the construction, land remediation and environmental services are strong as the main drivers remain independent of the sluggish general economic situation. Immediate specific business opportunities are being pursued as well as the more strategic long term “partnering” relations, co-ordinating closely with our client IBT Partners provides ongoing in-market management support.
