France’s Biotech Supercluster

french_biotech

Three biotechnology trade clusters of France – Cancer-Bio-Santé of Toulouse, Innovations Thérapeutiques of Strasbourg and LyonBiopôle – have pooled resources to attract non-French companies to their regions. The new “supercluster”, baptised Life-science Corridor France, now forms a viable alternative to Paris which has historically dominated French biotech.

The three clusters are complementary: Lyon has the second greatest concentration of biotech after Paris, with specialisations in infectious diseases, vaccinations and diagnostics with heavyweights Sanofi-Pasteur, Bio-Merieux and Becton Dickinson. Cancer-Bio-Santé (Toulouse) focuses on the prevention, diagnostic and therapy of cancer, with some 60 bio/health companies led by large pharma laboratories Sanofi-Aventis and Pierre Fabre. Innovations Thérapeutiques (Strasbourg) covers a wide scope, ranging from genomics to medical imagery and robotics. The largest companies include Transgene, Sanofi-Aventis and Biorad.

The new supercluster is targeting partnerships with American, Japanese and Canadian biotech companies. A first initiative consists of selecting 15 companies out of 90 candidates to meet with biotech companies from selected trade cluster around Boston, San Diego, Montreal, Quebec, Kobe and Osaka.
