Spending more and decentralising decisions. Listed museums in France, number more than 1,300 and are grouped in three main regions, the Ile de France/Paris (10%), the Alps-Cote d’Azur (15%) the Lorraine - Eastern France (17%) regions. Also for those who love Paris, it is noted that 10 of the 15 most visited museums and historical monuments are in the Paris region and these alone account for over 18m (30%) of the >53m museum annual visits.

Growth in annual tourist visits has driven the French government to increase funding for museums, historical monuments and registered sites by >10% and place call this a “policy priority”.

Also, there are changes in the way this is administered; the principal thrust of the change has been to grant more autonomy to local management.

Another opportunity is the number of major museum projects in the works including the Quai Branly being built next to the Tour Eiffel which will be the future home of the museum of Art and Civilisation in the Americas, Africa and Asia with a planned opening in 2006/2007.

And with a further 2,400 historical monuments open to the public in France and over 41,000 registered sites – it is not surprising that France is the most tourist visited country in the world.
