The Dordogne region

43% of Dordogne’s land area is covered by forest and woodland, making it the 3rd most forested department in France. The southwest region of France (the Aquitaine), which the Dordogne is a part of, is France’s most forested region.

1M m3 of cord wood and timber is produced annually supplying a number of industries, such as the building, packaging, furniture (regrouping plywood panels, chip board, slats glued) and sign making industries, whilst an additional 1M m3 remains untapped into.

There are an uncommonly wide variety of trees here, being 66% hardwood and 34% softwood.

There are over 180 companies, turning over >245M€ and providing more than 2,000 jobs. There are more than 100,000 landowners, with 21% owning over 81% (>794,278 acres) of this land. It should be noted that 99% of the forest is in private hands.
