Online retailing in Europe: comparing France, UK and Germany

More than 160 million Europeans visited an on-line retailing site (e-commerce site) in October 2007 (5% more then in October 2006). For the whole of 2007, B2C internet sales amounted $133 Bn. www.marketresearch.com estimates a growth of 25% for the next four years, implying that on-line sales for goods and services in Europe will have tripled to $407Bn by 2011. In addition, on-line presentation and reputation are pre-requisites for modern business: consumers increasingly compare products on-line before purchasing. Three countries – , the UK, France and Germany, account for 72% of all online sales in Europe.

From Oct 2006 to Oct 2007, on-line sales rose 11% in the UK, reinforcing the UK’s lead in on-line retailing. Germany, in second place, saw no growth over this period as consumers were worried by transport strikes. On-line retailing in France also saw an 11% gain although from a much lower base than in the UK.
