Rungis: the Largest Fresh Produce Market in the World

rungisImagine the bustle and energy  of a market that opens before sunrise, featuring over 20,400 regular buyers! Rungis counts over 1,300 companies, of which 425 are wholesalers.
The latter typically rent a space in the market, from a few square metres to large installations, while buyers apply through the market operating company, Semmaris, for a licence. While buying and selling methods differ slightly in each product line, most rely on a type of old-fashioned open-outcry auction system.

Rungis officially opened in 1969 and is organised according to 7 product lines: meat, dairy, fruit & vegetables, seafood, catering, horticulture & decoration, and equipment. All this culminated in sales of over €7Bn last year, reaching an encatchment area of over 18M consumers.

Rungis lies just outside Paris, near Orly airport, and is the largest of France’s 18 national fresh produce markets, or agro-food platforms as they call themselves.
