The French biotech landscape has recently seen the emergence of a complete network of public & private actors in the biotech field: the French biopoles, or regional innovation network, grouping together public research laboratories and hospitals, universities, incubators and established companies.
The role of the biopoles is to facilitate interaction between the different actors involved in technology transfer and to help companies in their initial stage of creation and development by providing them with the necessary infrastructure, services and support. The government will back companies in such clusters through funding, tax exemptions and, for researchers involved in government-approved R&D projects, payroll tax breaks, to the tune of €1.5Bn over a 3-year period.
Targeted support from national authorities and other regional authorities contributed to the creation of seven clusters or « Genopoles » (activity centers) specialised in genomics and post-genomics: Evry-Ile de France (Paris region), Lille (Nord Pas de Calais), Strasbourg (BioValley), Lyon and Grenoble (Rhône-Alpes), Marseille- Montpellier, Toulouse, Bordeaux and Nantes.
