France imports about two-thirds of its agricultural machinery (AM) needs. Its principal suppliers are typically also the main clients for French agricultural machinery. France produced €1.3Bn of AM during the first half of 2004 of which €830M were exported. Tractors made up nearly a third of French production.
The six largest exporters of AM to France, (Germany, Italy, UK, US, Sweden and Belgium) represent 80% of total French AM imports. Their market share has remained largely stable over the last few years. The pie chart to the right illustrates the breakdown of types of machinery.
This has evolved over the last few years as the share of tractors has decreased to the advantage of more differentiated machinery as French farmers adopt more precision farming.
